THUR MAY 15 2025-theGBJournal| Nigeria played 391 passes, had four shots on target and 55% possession and lost 0-1 to South Africa.

The numbers underscore the dominance of the Flying Eagles who lost the bid for a shot at the Africa U-20 Cup of Nations title inside the Suez Canal Stadium in Egypt.

Nigeria U-20 Head Coach promised his side will play with freedom, and he delivered on his promise. But that proved to be his undoing.

South Africa’s midfielder, Tylon Smith delivered the deadly blow to Nigeria in the 66th minute with a smooth header after Neo Rapoo sent a clean corner from the right flank.

The Flying Eagles responded with furious attacking urgency. But the South Africans held on.

The loss ends Nigeria’s hope of winning a record-extending eight Africa U-20 Cup of Nations trophy but they head to Chile for the next U20 World Cup tournament in September.
