THUR MAY 08 2025-theGBJournal| Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, elected by the Cardinals on Thursday has made his first appearance as the Successor of Peter from the Central Loggia of St Peter’s Basilica, greeting the city of Rome and the world.
He waved and greeted the faithful and the world invoking peace and pledging to work for a united Church faithful to Jesus and to the Gospel.
His election was a profound moment for the Catholic Church as well as the global community who followed keenly for two days the proceedings until Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti announced that the Cardinals have elected Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Pope Leo XIV.
Cardinal Mamberti made the announcement after the 133 Cardinal electors decided, and white smoke billowed from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel.
President Donald J. Trump said while congratulating the new Pope ”it is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope. What excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!”
World leaders, present and past have also sent in congratulatory messages.
