MON, MAY 04 2020-theG&BJournal- ‘’On average 4 out of 10 individuals in Nigeria has real per capita expenditures below 137,430 Naira per year in 2019,’’ According to the latest National Bureau of Statistics’ (NBS) Poverty and Inequality report. ‘’This translates to over 82.9 million Nigerians or 40.1% of the populace who are considered poor by national standards.’’
Sokoto State is recorded as the poorest State in the country- 87.73% of people in the state are poor. Lagos State has the lowest poverty headcount at 4.50%.
Taraba, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Adamawa each have a poverty headcount of 87.72%, 87.02%, 79.76% and 75.41 respectively, putting them within the top five poorest states in the country.
The report also shows rural poverty rate is as high as 52.10% while urban poverty rate is moderate at 18.04%.
The average expenditure-Quintiles or 20% of given population- by the richest state is clocked at N415,254 and average expenditure by poorest 20% was N65, 690.
