79.50% of persons killed in road traffic accidents in Nigeria in Q1 2024 are men

TUE JULY 09 2024-theGBJournal| According to new data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), more men than women were killed in road collisions across the country in Q1-2024.

The data revealed that 1,169 males were killed in Q1 2024, accounting for 79.50% of 1,471 persons killed, compared to 302 (20.50%) females killed.

Also, a total of 6,749 males were injured during the period, indicating 77.90% of 8,659 injured persons compared to 1,910 (22.10%) females injured.

Of all crashes, serious cases stood top in Q1 2024 with 1,715 compared to fatal and minor cases with 693 and 254 respectively.

In addition, the three categories of cases recorded a decline in the quarter under review relative to the preceding quarter.

The total number of road traffic crashes in Nigeria Q1 2024 was 2,662, indicating a decrease of 2.02% from the previous quarter which recorded 2,717 and an 3.00% fall from 2,733 in Q1 2023.

Similarly, a total of 3,952 vehicles were involved in road traffic crashes in Q1 2024, lower compared to the previous quarter which recorded 4,195, indicating a decrease of 5.80%.

Commercial vehicles bore the brunt of the crashes with as high as 71.02% in total. Analysts attribute the high number on the inhuman condition of most commercial vehicles plying the routes in the country.

Kaduna State witnessed the most crashes, 1706 in total with 999 casualty and 171 killed. Niger State recorded the second highest number of deaths during the period under review with 119 killed. Oshun and Ogun also recorded high deaths of 96 and 98 respectively.

Speed violation, use phone while driving, tyre burst, mechanically deficient vehicles, brake failure, bad road and dangerous overtaking are identified as the major causative factors.
