LAGOS, JULY 29, 2016 – The Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Dr Babatunde Adejare, on Friday appealed to residents of the state to come out en-masse to participate in July’s monthly sanitation scheduled for Saturday.This is contained in a statement signed by the Director, Public Affairs in the ministry, Mr Tunde Awobiyi, and made available in Lagos.
The statement further urged the people to use the exercise to “clean and clear drains in their neighbourhood’’.
According to the commissioner, this month’s exercise will still be dedicated to cleaning of drains and canals across the state.
”This is to ensure a free flow of water as well as continually prevent flooding now that the raining reason is nearing its peak.
”The exercise will be observed state-wide between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., during which there will be restriction of human and vehicular movements.
”The hours should not be used for any social engagement or sporting activities, but for serious cleaning and sanitation,” it said.
Adejare said that inter-state bus and luxurious bus operators, transport owners and road transport workers should also comply with the restriction order on movement.
He warned that drivers and passengers of such vehicles caught violating the order would be prosecuted be prosecuted according to the Lagos State’s Environmental Sanitation Laws.
Adejare said that the Nigeria Police, the Lagos Waste Management Agency, (LAWMA), the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) offices had been mobilised to enforce the restriction of movement order.
