MON JUNE 10 2024-theGBJournal| The Super Eagles scored in the 31st minute of the game through midfielder Raphael Onyedika.
That was all the Super Eagles could muster in the pulsating game against the Cheeters of Benin Republic, once considered a minnow in world and African football scene.
Benin Republic Cheeters, coached by former Super Eagles boss, Gernot Rohr, struck back in the 36th to level up the game after a horrible defensive error by defender, Calvin Bassey.
The Super Eagles were hoping to redeem themselves after their disappointing 1-1 draw against South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State last weekend.
But the Eagles fell behind in the 46th minutes following a sublime strike by Benin forward, Mounie, delivered through a corner kick.
The loss left the Eagles winless in any of their first four World Cup qualifiers, sitting still in fifth place in Group C with miserable 3 points.
In the second half, the sturdy and well organized Benin Republic defense held their ground, leaving Nigeria’s Head Coach Finidi George clueless on how to reorganize the Nigerian attack loaded with class players.
The play and the outcome of the match today shows Head Coach Finidi can’t lay claim that he knows where the Super Eagles strength lie.
If he is to remain as head coach, that is his next schooling.
