LAGOS, AUGUST 30, 2016 – No fewer than 150 able-bodied and disabled armwrestlers are to converge on Lagos for the International Invitational Championships put together by the Nigeria Armwrestling Federation (NAWF).The President NAWF, Olatunji Jackson, said that the two-day tournament would commence on Sept. 16 and end on 17.

The championships will hold in two venues, the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere and the Sport Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Secretariat at the National Stadium, Lagos.

Jackson said that five countries had already registered for the competition.

“Egypt, Cameroon, Morocco, India and the U.K. have already registered and registration is still open for more countries to participate.

“Entry closes on Sept. 10 and we have made plans for no fewer than 150 armwrestlers but we will use home advantage to register as many Nigerians as possible.

“This is an international competition and we want to use the opportunity to expose as many armwrestlers as possible.

“We are not incurring bills for air tickets and other expenses but if we are to attend the competition outside the country, it will cost us a fortune,’’ he said.

Jackson added that the championships would be used to select the country’s representatives at the 38th Armwrestling World Championships in Bulgaria in October.

“Top Nigerians at the competition will be selected to make the team list to Bulgaria. The tournament is at hand and we need to prepare in earnest so as to excel.

“Doing well requires adequate preparation and we won’t be leaving any stone unturned,’’ he said.
